Getting behind by getting ahead

so i was sitting in a traffic jam the other day, much like every other day, and just like every other day i was switching lane from lane in hopes of getting ahead. then i noticed a pattern that i and the cars around me had. we would switch lanes. then notice that the lane we just left got faster. we would wait it out thinking that it was only a matter of time before the new lane speeds up again. then when we would the notice the old car that was infront of us get ahead we would get frustrated and go back into the old lane. but of course by the time you sneek back into that lane, you are a couple of cars behind the car that use to be infront of you. then naturally the lane you just left would speed up. and again after the car that was infront of you passes you would try to get back into that lane...... thus, you would be getting further and further behind everytime you switch lanes. perfect irony. i love it.
